Fishing
Apache Lake is home to a large and diverse community of fish that will ensure that every fishermen who visits this body of water will return home with a sense of satisfaction. This community is comprised of both small game fish and larger ones that make for excellent trophies. Some of the major game fish species of Apache Lake include walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, sunfish, yellow bass, channel catfish, and flathead catfish. Walleye is a species that can fight quite aggressively; it is a popular target among experienced fishermen at Apache Lake and across the United States. During the spawning season, walleye can be caught using light tackle off of the shoreline. While they can be caught in large numbers during this time of year, they are smaller and easier to catch. Anglers in search of a challenge will need to travel to the deeper waters of Apache Lake during the Summer and Fall. During this time, fishermen should use crankbaits that are equipped to a medium weight rod. Walleye of 10 pounds or more are frequently hooked, so it is necessary to fight the fish to exhaustion before reeling if a light test is best used. Apache Lake also offers great opportunities for largemouth bass fishing. This species can be found in the rocky nooks and crannies that are located in areas of the lake. Weed beds near the shore are also great locations to search. When targeting largemouth bass, light tackle is the best option. Among light tackle choices, diving crankbaits and spinnerbaits are usually effective. The population of largemouth bass in Apache Lake is at very high levels, so this species is relatively easy to target if the proper tackle is being used. In the deeper sections of Apache Lake, fishermen are able to target populations of catfish that can be found in an average abundance. Fishermen should search for deep holes using fish finders, as these are where catfish tend to reside. Once at an ideal location, a bottom rig setup should be used. Stink baits, nightcrawlers, and chicken livers are all excellent bait for catfishing.
