Fishing
Bullards Bar Reservoir has a very wide selection of species for fishermen to target. Some of these species are large and aggressive, while others are small and docile. There is something for fisherman of all styles and preferences. Some of the primary game species of Bullards Bar Reservoir include kokanee salmon, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, lake trout, rainbow trout, crappie, bluegill, and several species of smaller panfish. Among these species, Bullards Bar Reservoir is renowned for its kokanee salmon. These are large fighters that will certainly challenge even the most experienced of fishermen. Those fishermen targeting this monster should travel to an area known as Mills Creek Cove. This area shelters a particularly dense population of kokanee salmon and the chances of hooking one increases dramatically here. Fishermen should use a boat in order to troll the waters in the cove. A speed of three to six miles per hour is ideal. Large spoons should be used in order to achieve the best results. During the Summer, the kokanee salmon migrate to deeper waters in order to compensate for the water's rising temperature. The same trolling tactics can be used here as well. Bullards Bar is an excellent location for the largemouth bass enthusiasts. This reservoir holds an enormous population of average size largemouth bass that make for fun and exciting fishing trips. The best location for catching largemouth bass is at the entrances to the many creeks that lead away from the reservoir. Fishermen should target this species using light tackle such as buzz baits and jigs. During the Spring, largemouth bass can also be caught in shallow water near hydrilla beds due to spawning. Many fly fishermen also travel to Bullards Bar Reservoir due to its high abundance of trout. Rainbow trout is the most popular species and can be found in the area near the dam. The dam creates a turbulent water environment with fresh, cold water. The rainbow trout thrives in this environment, so it is ideal to target this location. Fly rods are the most effective technique, but rainbow trout have also been caught by using light tackle. This species can put up a strong fight, so they present a fun and exciting challenge to anglers of all skill levels.
