Fishing

The most popular game targets of Raccoon Lake include largemouth bass, bluegill, white bass, striped bass, crappie, perch, channel catfish, and various species of panfish.

Largemouth bass can be targeted throughout most of Raccoon Lake’s drop-offs and near sheltered areas.  During the early morning and late evening, bass feed on smaller fish and insects near the shoreline, so shallow locations near submerged timber and vegetation are ideal places to target during these times. The areas near the recreation area and western edges of Raccoon Lake are both suitable for targeting largemouth bass.

Bluegill can be targeted along the shoreline and in areas that are sheltered from the open waters of Raccoon Lake.  Areas of submerged timber, vegetation, and other debris are great places to begin searching for bluegill.  Specifically, there are many locations that serve as habitats for bluegill on the western side of Raccoon Lake.

Crappie and panfish can also be targeted in the same locations as bluegill, so a standard light tackle setup is ideal.  Target the Highway 36 bridge and the many main lake points for schooling crappie.

Stripe BassStriped and white bass roam the deeper waters of Raccoon Lake.  Target the dam area trolling spoons, small spinners, crankbaits and various plastics.  Look for disruptions on the surface of feeding baitfish or bird activity and sneak in for some fast paced fun.

Channel catfish can be targeted in the deep areas of water that are spread throughout the open lake. When targeting catfish, a bottom rig should be used.  These bottom dwellers are not picky, so a variety of baits can be used successfully.  Look for deep pools near the dam area for large catfish.

Facilities

The facilities and accommodations of Raccoon Lake include boat ramps, fishing piers, cleaning stations, restrooms, tackle shops, grocery stores, lodging, fueling stations, and recreation areas, and information centers.
