Clarks Hill Lake

Surrounded by the beautiful scenery of eastern Georgia, Clarks Hill Lake, also known as Lake Strom Thurmond, is the ideal location for travelers and fishermen in search of exciting adventures and relaxing surroundings.  Clarks Hill Lake is a reservoir that is situated along the border of Georgia and South Carolina.  It is located to the Northeast of Augusta, Georgia.  Clarks Hill Lake was impounded by the J. Strom Thurmond Dam off of the Savannah River in1951.  Water flows into and exits Clarks Hill Lake from the Savannah River.

Clarks Hill Lake is a large body of water with a large selection of many popular freshwater game fish.  The most frequently targeted species of Clarks Hill Lake include largemouth bass, hybrid bass, striped bass, catfish, sunfish, crappie, and pickerel.  

The largemouth bass of Clarks Hill can be located around rocky areas near the mid-lake points and hydrilla beds scattered throughout the lake.  Look for water flows from Garys, Lloyds & Rousseau creeks near the Little River arm and Soap, Murray & Fishing creeks in the Savannah River arm for great action.

Crappie are plentiful in Clarks Hill Lake and they grow big! Some of the most popular locations for targeting crappie include: (Spring) Soap, Grays, Pistol & Newford Creeks - (Summer/Fall) fish under and around bridges and near deep drops – (Winter) target Big, Hart, Dry Fork, Knoblick and Cherokee Creeks.  Anglers should use light lined spinning rigs with a jig and minnow or crappie jigs.

Striped & Hybrid bass can be caught by trolling the waters north of Holiday Park and the waters near the west bank of Clarks Hill Lake and along the dam area.

Fishermen in search of catfish should find deep waters across the lake.  The use of bottom rigs is recommended.  Keg, Germany, Big, and Hart Creeks are all excellent locations for targeting this species.  The deep waters near the J. Strom Thurmond Dam are also ideal for targeting catfish and other species.

The Lake

Clarks Hill Lake is a large reservoir with a large number of creeks and coves that are filled with a variety of aquatic vegetation.  This body of water has a total surface area of 71,000 acres and an elevation of 330 feet.  It has a maximum depth of 140 feet.
