Fishing
Kentucky Lake is a warm body of water that supports many popular species of fish. Most of these fish are favorites throughout the entire United States. These populations range all the way from challenging trophy fish to feisty panfish. Some major species of game fish in Kentucky Lake include largemouth bass, crappie, channel catfish, bluegill, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, white bass, blue catfish, sauger, and quillback. Among these species, the largemouth bass is the most popular. This species can be caught throughout most of the lake in high abundance. One of the best areas to target is along the banks. Anglers should search for banks that have tree limbs hanging over the water. The insects that fall off of the limbs and into the water will attract baitfish, which, in turn, will attract largemouth bass. Once at one of these ideal locations, a light tackle setup should be used. Jigs, crankbaits, and topwater lures all work very well. For fishermen in search of panfish, the areas underneath overhanging tree limbs work very well. These bluegill feed in these areas during the morning and evening. A light tackle setup or fly rod can be used very effectively for capturing this species. Sunfish and crappie also tend to feed in these areas. Catfish is also a commonly targeted species in Kentucky Lake. Kentucky Lake offers two species of catfish: the blue catfish and the channel catfish. Both varieties can be caught using the same methods. Anglers should find a deep fishing hole or channel, as catfish feed off of the lake floor in deep areas. The deep waters near the dam offer excellent opportunities for catfishing. For best results, fishermen should use a bottom rig equipped with a two ounce weight and one or two hooks. Cut shad works very well, but nightcrawlers, chicken livers, and stink baits are all effective. Although some catfish can be caught on a line with a light test, there is always the chance that a monster of a catfish will bite. In preparation for this situation, fishermen should equip their rods with 15 to 20 pound test. Fishermen will find that the numerous species in Kentucky Lake offer countless opportunities for adventure.
