Located among the beautiful painted canyons of southern Texas, Lake Amistad is an excellent location for fishing as well as sightseeing. Fishermen will find that they will create excellent memories based on an exciting outdoors experience and stellar views. This lake is a reservoir off of the Rio Grande River. It is located 12 miles north of the city of Del Rio. Lake Amistad is home to numerous species of fish that make it one of the best locations for fishing in the entire Southwest region of the United States.

Fishing
Due to its strong populations of fish, many serious anglers flock to Lake Amistad from across the country. Some major fish species that can be found in Lake Amistad include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, blue catfish, white bass, striped bass, crappie, sunfish, bluegill, and carp. Of these species, largemouth bass is the most targeted species among Lake Amistad's anglers.

Largemouth bass can be found in very high abundance at Amistad and is readily available in varying sizes. The lake record is slightly over 15 pounds and many other largemouth bass are frequently captured in Amistad. Due to the rocky structure of Lake Amistad, there are many nooks and crannies that serve as excellent hiding spots for largemouth bass. Fishermen should target these many areas in addition to the beds of hydrilla that can be found in the shallow areas of Lake Amistad. The best tackle setups for largemouth bass fishing in Lake Amistad include buzzbaits, topwater baits, and spinners. Smallmouth bass can also be caught in Lake Amistad, but in lesser numbers. This species is limited to weed beds near the shore due to the high populations of the dominant largemouth bass throughout the lake. Jigs, spinners, and flies can be used to effectively catch smallmouth bass.

Catfish is also a common target in Lake Amistad. Both of the catfish species in Lake Amistad, channel and blue, have an average abundance and can be caught in deep fishing holes. It is important for fishermen to use a boat to travel to the deepest fishing holes in the lake, as these provide excellent habitats for catfish populations. Both species of catfish by using a bottom rig equipped with 1 or 2 hooks, a 2 ounce weight, and a bait such as stink bait, chicken livers, or any variety of cut bait. The catfish is not a picky eater, so many varieties of bait can be used as long as it carries a strong scent. Anglers will also find that Lake Amistad is excellent for catching panfish. These can be caught in the shallow waters using light tackle or fly rods.


Facilities
Amistad fishermen have several facilities available at the lake and in Del Rio. These include marinas, paved boat landings, piers, fueling stations, grocery stores, tackle shops, and lodging. These facilities and accommodations ensure that visits to Lake Amistad are free of stress and easy to plan.
The Lake
Lake Amistad is a large reservoir fed by the Rio Grande River. It has a total area of 69,000 acres and a maximum depth of 217 feet. Due to its large size, Lake Amistad is able to support excellent stocks of fish that make it one of the best locations for fishing.

Fishermen should make every effort to visit Lake Amistad at least once.
