Any angler who visits Lake Mead will know that there are many opportunities for a fun and exciting fishing experiences. Due to the large variety of size and species of the game fish in Lake Mead, fishermen of many styles and preferences will enjoy a fishing trip at Lake Mead. Some of the major fish species of Lake Mead include largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish and flathead catfish. The primary target of Lake Mead's fishermen is the largemouth bass. This species can be found in a high abundance at average sizes. With a bit of luck and planning, there are also opportunities for catching some trophy sized largemouth bass. One of the best locations to find largemouth bass is in the areas between cliff faces and rock formations. These rocky areas can be chummed with canned corn in order to attract largemouth bass and other large predators. Once the area is sufficiently chummed, a light tackle set up should be used. Spinners, buzz baits, and crankbaits are all excellent choices. There also incredible opportunities for catching catfish at Lake Mead. Channel catfish are in a high abundance, but there have been sightings of huge flathead catfish in the area. In order to catch a catfish, fishermen should target the deep fishing holes formed by the nooks and crannies in Lake Mead's rocky structure. These holes offer the perfect habitat for all varieties of catfish. Since the catfish is a bottom feeder, a medium weight rod setup with a bottom rig should be used. On most days, a 1 or 2 ounce weight is sufficient. Ideal baits include stink baits, anchovies, nightcrawlers, and chicken livers. Many other baits can also be used, but those of the artificial variety should be avoided. The striped bass is also a common target of Lake Mead fishermen. This species can be found in the depths of Lake Mead. Light tackle setups are the best options for fishermen in search of striped bass. Bottom rigs can also be used. Anchovies tend to be the most successful bait choice for striped bass fishing.
