Fishing
Anglers who visit Lake Mohave experience a unique fishing adventure that is filled with excitement and exhilaration. There are a variety of species available for capture that will provide a fun time to fishermen of many experience levels. Some of the primary game fish species of Lake Mohave include common carp, rainbow trout, striped bass, largemouth bass, channel catfish, smallmouth bass, threadfin shad, white crappie, and green sunfish. The rainbow trout is a species that has dense populations throughout Lake Mohave. This species can be found near the dam and the various inlets of Lake Mohave. As a general rule, rainbow trout prefer areas of turbulent and cool water. Light tackle setups or fly rods are the most effective options when targeting rainbow trout. When hooked, most species of trout will jump. This can cause a line to easily break if there is not enough slack. The striped bass is another target that can be found near the Davis Dam. This species resides in the deeper waters below the dam. In these areas, anglers should troll at speeds of 2 to 4 miles per hour using large spoons, tube jigs, or spinnerbaits. During mid day, surf rods equipped with bottom rigs and anchovies can also be used effectively. When targeting the striped bass, fishermen should equip their medium weight rods with 15 to 20 pound test. This species will thrash and deliver a strong fight, so it is absolutely necessary to wear the striped bass down before reeling it in. The largemouth bass is a species that can be found throughout Lake Mohave in a variety of locations. This species has a large abundance, so largemouth bass of various sizes have been caught. Anglers looking to catch largemouth bass should target the coves and points in the northern portion of Lake Mohave. Creeks filled with weed beds and submerged timber are also great places to search for largemouth bass. The best tackle options include tube jigs, imitation shad, spinnerbaits, and deep diving crankbaits. Smallmouth bass can be caught using similar methods in the central and southern portions of Lake Mohave. Lake Mohave is also known for its large populations of crappie. This game fish can be found in shallow waters throughout the entire lake. Fishermen should target downed trees, points, coves, and weed beds for optimal results. Bobbers, crankbaits, spinners, and fly rods are all great options.
