Anglers will find that Lake Norman presents numerous opportunities for fishing due to a community of plentiful fish that vary in size and species. This allows both inexperienced and avid anglers to enjoy the excitement that fishing has to offer. Some of the major species of Lake Norman include channel catfish, striped bass, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, white bass, blue catfish, and yellow perch.

The species of catfish in Lake Norman offer opportunities for fishermen who enjoy targeting large game fish. Lake Norman's catfish can be found throughout the entire lake, but fishermen will need to travel to certain locations depending on the size that they would like to target. In order to target catfish that range from 5 to 10 pounds, fishermen should utilize piers or use a boat to fish in channels close to the shore. These smaller catfish present excellent opportunities to families and those fishermen who are less experienced. The larger species of catfish can be found in Lake Norman's deepest waters. These large targets can grow beyond 50 pounds and put up a strong fight. In order to find these larger varieties of catfish, fishermen should travel to the deep holes directly below the dam. A depth finder can be used to find other great fishing spots. A strong setup equipped with a bottom rig is necessary when targeting catfish.

Striped bass, also known as rockfish, is a popular target also found in Lake Norman's deep waters. This species is a strong fighter that thrashes, so it presents a challenge to fishermen of all experience levels. This fish can be caught using bottom rigs or trolling methods. When trolling for striped bass, fishermen should drive at a speed of 2 to 4 miles per hour using spinners and bluefish rigs.

The largemouth bass of Lake Norman are popular targets of many avid fishermen. This species is frequently caught in the areas of shallow, vegetated areas. The area where Lake Norman sprawls to Mooresville, North Carolina is a great location to target. Once in this area, fishermen should search coves, weed beds, and areas near logs and other debris. Fishermen will also find that the area of the lake closest to route 77 has an abundant population of largemouth bass. Lake Norman State Park is another notable largemouth bass fishing location. Deep diving crankbaits are among the most successful tackle options for largemouth bass in Lake Norman.

Crappie, Bluegill and yellow perch offer opportunities for casual fishermen and families. These species are small, feisty, and plentiful. Fishermen targeting these smaller fish should rely on light tackle or fly rods.

Lake Norman is one of North Carolina's largest bodies of freshwater. It has an area of 50 square miles. This reservoir is 34 miles long and 8 miles wide. Lake Norman has a maximum depth of 130 feet.
