Lake of the Ozarks

Located in the heart of Missouri, Lake of the Ozarks is a warm body of water known for its large and diverse populations of freshwater game fish. Lake of the Ozarks is a reservoir formed by Bagnell Dam off of the Osage River. The Osage River, Niangua River, and Grandglaize Creek all feed water into the Lake of the Ozarks. Lake of the Ozarks also provides for some of the best fishing trips in the entire United States.

Fishing

Due to its large size and multiple waterways flowing into the Lake of the Ozarks, many anglers make visits due to numerous opportunities for fishing. Lake of the Ozarks is home to a large and healthy community of fish. Within this community, fishermen will find populations of game fish ranging from challenging trophy fish to simple panfish. The primary game fish of Lake of the Ozarks includes flathead catfish, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, white bass, blue catfish, and spotted bass.

The largemouth bass is one of the most commonly targeted species in Lake of the Ozarks. This species can be found at the areas directly in front of the rivers that feed into reservoir. During the spawning season, largemouth bass reside in the shallow waters near weed beds. At all locations, largemouth bass can be captured plastics, spinners, jigs, crankbaits and buzz baits. Ozark bass can grow to 16 pounds and and fight strong. Look for bass in North Buck Creek Cove, around all docks and off the many main lake points.

The various species of catfish are also popular species among fishermen at Lake of the Ozarks. Throughout the entire lake, there are various fishing holes and deep channels that serve as excellent habitats for catfish. There are notable fishing holes in front of the Niangua River entrance. These locations are great places to target catfish and should be visited by fishermen in search of catfish. Once at these areas, a bottom rig equipped with cut baits or stink baits will greatly assist in catching catfish. These fish grow to very large sizes, so it is necessary to use a fishing line with a high test; 10 to 20 pound test is ideal.

The walleye is also a great target of Lake of the Ozarks. This species of fish is a strong fighter that can be found in high abundance throughout the entire lake. During the Spring, walleye can be found close to shores. They can be found in deeper waters during the rest of the year. Anglers should target walleye using a medium weight rod equipped with spinners, jigs, or crankbaits. A fishing line with a test of 10 to 15 pounds is the best option available.

For fishermen who enjoy a more casual day on the water, bluegill, crappie, and other panfish can be caught using light tackle or fly rods.  Crappie are very popular at Lake of the Ozarks and grow big. Look for Crappie near Community Bridge, in the cove near Linn Creek and on any structure

There are numerous facilities available that ensure that visits to Lake of the Ozarks are convenient and enjoyable. This includes tackle shops, marinas, piers, boat landings, and lodging.

Lake of the Ozarks is a large reservoir. It has a total of area of 84 square miles and a maximum depth of 130 feet. This provides plenty of room for large fish populations and the anglers who target them.
