The opportunities for fishing in Lake Oconee are quite plentiful due to a healthy and diverse population of numerous game fish.  These species can offer an exceptional challenge to some of the best anglers of Georgia and the entire United States.  The primary game species of Lake Oconee include channel catfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, blue catfish, and white bass. The channel catfish of Lake Oconee can offer excitement for fishermen of all skill levels.  Although this species can be caught throughout the entire lake, anglers in search of the larger varieties should use a boat to reach the lake’s deepest fishing holes.  Such locations include the deep waters near the Wallace Dam and the various holes that can be found using a depth finder.  A basic bottom rig is ideal for targeting catfish.  The largemouth bass is one of the most frequently targeted species of Lake Oconee.  Fishermen should target vegetation and obstacles such as submerged timber and other debris in order to find this popular target.  The portions of the lake near Old Salem Park and Redlands are both excellent locations for targeting this species.  The smallmouth bass of Lake Oconee are also in high demand.  In order to target this species, fishermen should focus on the hydrilla beds near creeks and areas such as Reynolds Landing.  This species is best captured by using light tackle such as top water lures, jigs, spinners and plastics.  The striped bass is one of the most prized fighters of Lake Oconee.  Fishermen who decide to target this species will need to find the schools of baitfish during the morning and evening feeding times.  Taking note of where the birds are feeding and using electronics to find the densest portion of a school is one of the most reliable methods of finding an ideal striped bass fishing location.  Once this location is identified, fishermen should troll the waters at a speed of 2 to 5 miles per hour.  The white bass of Lake Oconee can be targeted using the same methods, but with a different trolling rig and baits.
