Fishing
Fishermen travel to Perry Reservoir from across the state of Kansas and the entire country in order to take part in a wonderful fishing experience. Perry Reservoir is home to a diverse community of fish that is supplemented by annual stocking from the lake's fisheries. There are numerous fish species in Perry Reservoir that vary in size and difficulty. Some of the major fish species in Perry Reservoir include bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, walleye, flathead catfish, green sunfish, largemouth bass, sauger, white bass, and blue catfish. While each species of fish can be targeted in a unique way, fishermen without a specific target should fish near schools of shad using medium to large sized hooks and light tackle. Large predators follow these schools, so these often present great opportunities for catching a variety of game fish. In order to find schools of shad, fishermen should look for birds that are hunting above the water. Several birds targeting a certain area of the lake is usually a key indicator that there is a school of baitfish nearby. Channel catfish can be found in an above average abundance throughout Perry Reservoir. This fish resides near the bottom of the lake in deep fishing holes. There is an area below the dam that anglers targeting catfish should definitely test. In the event that this location is not successful, fishermen should resort to using a fishing finder in order to find dips in the reservoir's bottom. Catfish of all varieties can be caught in these locations as well as at piers. The crappie is a species that is a favorite target among anglers who prefer the small and feisty game fish. Crappie can usually be found in coves and along the shallows throughout Perry Reservoir. The various points jutting from the shoreline are also great places to target. Crappie have been successfully caught using a variety of light tackle options, but tube jigs and minnows have been quite effective recently. A light rod equipped with a line of 5 to 10 pound test is the ideal setup. A fly rod can also be used. In recent years, the largemouth bass population of Perry Reservoir has begun to expand. Many largemouth bass captures have begun to rival the Kansas state record of 11 pounds. Fishermen in search of largemouth bass should target the areas of weeds and debris near the dam. These areas are known to hold bass populations throughout the year. Points and coves are places also worth taking the time to target. Tube jigs, spinnerbaits, and deep diving crankbaits are all excellent options for largemouth bass fishing. The walleye is a commonly targeted fighter that can be found in the depths of Perry Reservoir. Fishermen targeting this species should follow shad schools or randomly target deep waters. A deep diving crankbait is the single most effective tackle choice for catching this species. Since the walleye is such a strong fighter, a line with a test of 15 to 20 pounds on a medium weight rod is the proper setup.
