West Point Lake offers incredible opportunities for exciting fishing, so anglers will surely find something that attracts their attention.  The predominant game species of West Point Lake include popular southern freshwater targets such as largemouth bass, spotted bass, hybrid bass, striped bass, white bass, catfish, gar and crappie.

As a popular target across much of the United States, the largemouth bass is a frequently targeted by West Point fishermen.  The bass in West Point Lake are commonly captured in the 15 to 20 inch range and average over 1.5lbs with some big fish available.  During early spring, largemouth bass can be targeted in coves that are protected from the open water.  As the seasons become warmer, the focus should be shifted to main creeks and deep channels.  As a general rule, bass can be found in shallow waters during feeding times and deeper waters during the warmest parts of the day.

Spotted bass tend to reside in similar locations as the largemouth variety, although they should be targeted near rocky points and the edges of channels during summer and late-spring.

Hybrid bass can be targeted throughout most of the year in the areas near the Chattahoochee and other tributary inflows.  During the Spring, anglers should search for hybrid bass near the shoals in Franklin.Hybrid2.jpg

Striped bass can be targeted in the spring below the Chattahoochee and the shoals in Franklin.  They can be found near the West Point Dam during the warmer months.

The catfish of West Point Lake primarily include the flathead and channel varieties.  These can be targeted near the mouth of the Chattahoochee River, the dam, and various deep holes across the lake.  The use of a bottom rig is recommended.

The crappie population in West Point Lake is abundant and healthy.  This species is commonly found along the shoreline in weed beds and other shelters.  Using light tackle, West Point fishermen should target this species in the upper portions of Beech, Whitewater, Wehadkee, Yellow Jacket and Stroud creeks
