Fishing
Flathead River is home to a large and diverse community of fish that is constantly expanding. These healthy fish populations allow anglers to target most species in order to partake in the best fishing experience possible. Due to the presence of both large trophy fish and smaller panfish, anglers of all experience levels can enjoy all that Flathead River has to offer. Some of the major species of game fish include cutthroat trout, whitefish, rainbow trout, bull trout, lake trout, northern pike, brown trout, walleye, largemouth bass, bluegill, and sunfish.
The vast populations of trout in Flathead River attract fly fishermen from across Montana and the entire United States. As a general rule, most species of trout prefer to reside and feed in waters that are cold and moving. Due to this, fishermen in search of trout should avoid coves and areas sheltered from the main flow unless there is a spring or other water source nearby. Pressentine and Old Steel Bridge are both excellent locations for targeting trout many different varieties. The most prevalent species in these areas are rainbow trout and cutthroat trout. Once in one of these locations, anglers should find a location between the most turbulent waters and the calm waters near the shore. When the water levels are low, trout can be found closer to the turbulent water. The opposite is true when water levels are higher than average. Dry flies are the ideal tackle options during the Summer and warm months. Throughout the remainder of the year, wet flies can be used. If an angler decides to target a large individual from the trout community, a strong fly rod and reel should be used.
The northern pike of Flathead River offer an excellent opportunity for sport fishermen who seek trophies. This species can grow to an exceptional size and puts up a challenging fight. Fishermen in search of this species should travel to Kokanee Bend or the widest section of the river. At Kokanee Bend, fishermen should rely on spoons, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits. The morning and evening feeding times present the best opportunities for targeting pike. Slapping the water with a spoon tends to be an effective method of capture. A medium to heavy weight rod with a line of at least a 20 pound test is recommended.
Large walleye can also be caught in the open waters of Flathead River. This species should be targeting using deep diving crankbaits for optimal results.
Largemouth bass and a variety of panfish can be found in the areas known as Teakettle and Kokanee Bend. Bass fishermen should target the weed beds, submerged timber, and other hiding spots. Light tackle such as jigs, spinnerbaits, and deep diving crankbaits are all effective options.
