 Fishing

Squam Lake offers most of the fish found across the United States as well as a few species that are exclusively found in cold bodies of water.  The most notable of these species include landlocked salmon, brown trout, brook trout, lake trout, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, crappie, yellow perch and walleye.  While fishing in Squam Lake is fairly active throughout most of the year, April to October, or when the water temperature is above 55 degrees, is the best time to go fishing.  The landlocked Atlantic salmon of Squam Lake is a popular target of locals and visitors.  The most popular technique for catching this species is by trolling in the Spring immediately after the ice-out.  Fishermen should use live smelt or a smelt imitation in areas where the smelt schools run. The trout of Squam lake should be targeted in areas of fast, cold moving water.  The best location for this is the area where water flows to Little Squam Lake.  A variety of flies can be used with great success.  Both largemouth and smallmouth bass can be caught around the Squam Lake’s many islands and islets.  Loon Island and Three Sisters Island are both excellent locations to begin targeting.  Fishermen should target the dropoffs, gaps in weed beds, and hiding spots near tree stumps and submerged timber.  As a general rule, smallmouth bass tend to reside in shallower waters than the largemouth variety.  Anglers should equip their light or medium weight rods with jigs or plastics.  Jerkbaits are also useful.  Squam’s population of walleye can be targeted on some of the open flats that are spread out across the lake.  Crankbaits and buzzbaits are the most useful options for targeting this species.
