Fishing
With large populations of numerous fish species, anglers will find that Summit Lake is a location that will allow them to test out various methods and techniques. Some of the game fish that can be found in Summit Lake include largemouth bass, bluegill, carp, channel catfish, crappie, northern pike, and walleye.
Many of these fish reside in different locations of the lake, so targeting each species will take fishermen on a new adventure every time. Summit Lake is regarded as one of the best fishing locations in the state of Nebraska for crappie, bluegill, and other species of panfish. While their populations are of average size, these panfish, especially bluegills, have been known to grow to very large sizes. The best place to fish for these panfish is at an area known as the "humps". This is a small island located in front of the dam. Anglers should fish on the side of the island that is not facing the dam. The water here is calm and presents conditions that are perfect for bluegill and crappie populations.
At night, fishermen should travel to an area directly ahead of the calm side of the island. This will take anglers to an area that is excellent for find channel catfish. Fishermen should cast into these deep waters using a bottom rig equipped with a 1 or 2 ounce weight and medium sized hooks. A line with a 10 to 15 pound test is advisable, as some of the larger catfish can put up quite a fight. Channel catfish are hardly picky eaters, so any bait with a strong scent usually works. Stink baits and chicken livers are favorites among the locals and are usually successful.
For largemouth bass, the corners of the lake are the best locations to target. These areas are filled with dense vegetation that serve as an excellent habitat for the largemouth bass and its prey. When in these locations, fishermen should rely on light tackle including spinners, jigs, crankbaits, and swimbaits. There are many different ways to catch a largemouth bass, so experimentation may be necessary depending on how often the bass are biting on a certain day.
The walleye is another species that is popular in the Nebraska and Summit Lake. During the Spring, this fish can be caught close to the shore using crankbaits, but it becomes necessary to move to the deeper waters during the other seasons. Fishermen should use light tackle and crank baits regardless of where they are fishing. The walleye can put up a strong fight, so this can turn into quite the challenge.
