Fishing

While there are many different species of game and forage fish in Lac Courte Oreilles, the most abundant are musky, northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, yellow perch, crappie, and bluegill.

The musky easily wins the title for the most frequently targeted trophy fish in Lac Courte Oreilles.  This species can reach large sizes and offers enormous challenges to the anglers who target them.  Trolling the open waters of Lac Courte Oreilles is one of the best strategies available due to the ability to cover vast amounts of water.  During the morning and evening, musky can be located in the shallower areas of the lake’s open regions when they are feeding. Target Ralph's Bar near the entrance to Brubaker Bay and both shorelines in Barber Town Bay  Staying true to its name, the deepest waters of Musky Bay are great for targeting this trophy fish. Most of Lac Courte Oreilles is deep so focus on drop-offs near weed edges.  Productive areas include Stuckey Bay and Wismo Point.Musky.jpg

Northern pike can be found near weed beds adjacent to deeper waters.  Specific locations for targeting northern pike include the eastern banks of Lac Courte Oreilles and the northern end of Chicago Bay.

The walleye is a species that offers significant opportunities for fishing throughout most of the year.  During the entire spring-to-fall walleye season, the species can be targeted in deep waters of the lake.  Chicago Bay, Musky Bay, and the deep regions on the eastern side of the lake are all great for targeting walleye.  During the spring, smaller walleye can be targeted near the shoreline when the spawn hits. Year round action can be had near the many fish cribs in the lake.  Look for cribs on the north shore of Victory Heights, on the Southeast side of Chicago Bay and the south side of Winter Bar.

Crappie ReleaseSmallmouth bass are common in Lac Courte Oreilles and can be targeted in the sheltered habitats throughout the lake.  Such locations include shoreline weed beds, submerged timber, lake points, and sprawls.  Barbertown Bay and Burbaker Bay both have ideal areas for smallmouth bass fishing.

Panfish such as crappie, yellow perch and bluegill should be targeted in shallow areas throughout the entire lake.  Check the fish cribs along Wolf Point, and in Little Lac Courte Oreilles in front of the St. Francis church, on the west side of Blue Goose Bar, on the northeast side of Sweden’s Bar and Between Wismo Point and the Rock Pile (Crib Map).
