Fishing

The vast selection of targets ensures that anglers are able to embark on a fishing adventure that is appropriate for their skill levels.  The primary species of Falcon Lake include largemouth bass, channel catfish, black bass, and crappie.Like they are at most freshwater lakes and reservoirs, the largemouth bass of Falcon Lake are commonly targeted by many fishermen.

Falcon Lake is one of the most popular locations for largemouth bass fishing due to their large sizes.  Anglers who are up to the challenge of targeting a largemouth bass should test their luck at the Arroyo Burro or underneath the highway 83 bridge.  Both of these locations are filled with the smaller baitfish that largemouth bass feed on, so targeting weed beds and drop offs during feeding times often results in success.  When fishing for largemouth bass in Falcon Lake, fishermen should use spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and topwater lures.  Black bass can be caught with similar methods at Veleno.

The lake’s channel catfish can be caught in the deepest areas.  This includes the area of water near the dam and the various holes spread across the lake.  A depth finder and boat are necessary to find many of these locations.  Anglers should use a medium to heavy rod set-up equipped with bottom rigs and 2 to 3 ounce weights.  Baits such as stink baits, nightcrawlers, and squid are all excellent choices.  The crappie can be caught in high abundance under the highway 83 bridge.  The best fishing methods include topwater lures and other light tackle set-ups.  Nightcrawlers and crickets can be used as an alternative to artificial baits and lures.

Facilities
