Fishing

With large populations of both game fish and baitfish, Lake Konawa is very healthy and able to create a venue for high quality fishing.  The most notable fish species of Lake Konawa include largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegil, flathead catfish, blue catfish, crappie, and sunfish.  The largemouth bass population is one of Lake Konawa’s most prized assets.  In 2003, Lake Konawa was reported to have the largest growing population of largemouth bass among lakes greater than 1000 acres.  Konawa largemouth bass can be targeted as early as late February and as late as mid-December.  An ideal location to target is the discharge canal.  Fishermen cast a line at the cattails in the 6 to 8 feet depth range. The portion of the canal that is 15 feet deep is also a good location.  Plastic worms and spinnerbaits are among the most successful tackle options.  Light to medium weight rods with a line of 5 to 10 pound test is recommended.  Bluegill, crappie, and sunfish can be caught in the same discharge canal as well as on Lake Konawa’s various points.  When targeting these smaller panfish, fishermen should resort to using light tackle such as small lures and plastic worms.  Nightcrawlers and crickets are good bait choices as well.  The catfish of Lake Konawa can be caught in the deep area located near the discharge and in the center of the lake.  A depth finder can be used to find additional fishing spots.  Once in a good location, anglers should use a typical bottom rig equipped with a one or two ounce weight and catfish hooks.  Ideal baits include any variety of live or cut bait that emits a strong odor.
