Fishing
Anglers from across the country travel to the New River in order to take advantage of the incredible opportunities for game fishing. The New River offers a high abundance of fish ranging from small panfish to huge game targets. Some popular fish species of the New River include smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, striped bass, rock bass, walleye, muskie, crappie, bluegill, carp, flathead catfish, channel catfish, and brown trout. One of the most popular targets among skilled fishermen is the the brown trout. This species is capable of putting up a strong fight and can be found in average abundance. Those targeting the brown trout should use a fly rod. An area known as Mills Creek is one of the best locations for trout fishing in the New River, so this is a must visit location for fly fishermen. It is required by law for all trout fishermen to possess a trout stamp; anglers should make note of this law when planning a trip to the New River. Of all the bass populations in the New River, smallmouth bass are the most prevalent species. Due to its higher than average abundance, the smallmouth bass can be found in a variety of locations. Good locations include Brooks Falls and Sandstone Falls. Fishermen should use light tackle such as topwater baits, jigs, and spinners. If fishing in murky water, dark colored tackle should be used. Brightly colored tackle should be used in clear waters. Fly fishermen can also target the smallmouth bass with fly rods, as that is also a successful method of smallmouth bass fishing. During the Fall, walleye is a fish that is commonly targeted by fishermen. This species can put up a very strong fight and is found in the deeper waters of the New River. Anglers can target a variety of locations throughout the New River in search of walleye, but an area known as Tug Creek Beach is known to shelter a dense population of the species when the water temperature begins to drop in late October. Anglers will find that the best methods to fish for walleye include using light tackle such as jigs, crankbaits, and other topwater baits and lures. Line with a test of 10 to 20 pounds should be used, as walleye can grow to large sizes and are often aggressive fighters. Muskie is targeted during the Fall and late Summer by many fishermen. Trolling at a speed of 2-5 miles per hour is the best strategy for this species. Fishermen should use large spoons and be ready for a fight. A normal rod setup with light tackle and strong line can also be used very effectively.

Facilities
The availability of facilities along the New River depends on a fisherman's intended location. At some points, the New River is very remote, while in others it has all of the basics. Facilities at or near the New River include marinas, piers, paved boat ramps, tackle shops, and lodging.

Size and Characteristics
The New River is a fresh water waterway that is turbulent at some points and very still at others. Its total length is 320 miles and is excellent for fishing, boating, and all watersports.
